Buhoma to Ruhija drive for gorilla trekking

Often during peak season travel (Jun-Sep, holidays) while we are still able to secure Buhoma area lodges – Mahogany Springs Lodge, Gorilla Forest Camp and Bwindi Lodge – Buhoma area gorilla permits can be sold out. The next closest trekking region is Ruhija, which is approximately 1h45 mins away on unpaved roads. You will be advised at the time of confirmation if Ruhija permits have been secured for your travelers.

Guests depart Buhoma at approximately 6 am for the scenic drive to the Ruhija sector for gorilla trekking (there are no acceptable lodges in Ruhija currently). On the private transfer, get a glimpse of day breaking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Along the journey, you’ll pass through small villages, wave at children walking to their rural schools and see daily life in the villages that skirt the forest. Often on both sides of the vehicle, you’ll see dramatic scenery of both the forest and valleys terraced for farming…the stark line from forest to farmed land is very striking.

At times, you’ll enter swaths of dense forest, keeping your eye out for black and white colobus monkeys, a variety of bird species and the always picturesque mist rising from the deep valleys. You’ll also drive through dense bamboo forests – a sight to behold – and superb birding areas. After your gorilla trek, return to your lodge in Buhoma reflecting on the unforgettable experience of trekking mountain gorillas in the wilds of Bwindi along the way.
